A celebrity chef has revealed the one ingredient that takes cheese toasties to the next level.

Jamie Oliver shared a recipe on his website for the "ultimate" toastie, which can be enjoyed "as a working-from-home lunch, a quick dinner before (or after) the pub, or a guaranteed cure for the morning after".

He said of the recipe: "I'm not messing about here - this is the ultimate one and it's going to blow your mind. But there is a particular sequence of events that needs to happen in order to achieve the No. 1 toasted cheese sarnie.

"And we won't score any points for buying expensive, artisan bread here. It's important to go for something neutral and, in my eyes, only a white bloomer will do."

It takes just 15 minutes to make Jamie's toastie and you'll need two slices of bread and a cheese of your choice.

In a YouTube video, Jamies lays the recipe out: Spread butter on both sides of the bread, grate cheese and put together the sandwich.

Then, put it in a frying pan over medium-low heat for three minutes on each side until golden brown. After one side is done, Jamie puts something heavy, like a plate over the toastie to flatten it while it continues cooking.

Then Jamie takes the toastie to one side and grates cheese into the hot pan, sprinkling it with paprika. Once the cheese is melted, the toastie goes back on top and after a minute is taken out, revealing a crunchy, cheesy crown.

The chef accompanies his toastie with tomato ketchup, mango chutney and brown sauce "like a painter's palette", saying "anything goes".

If you're looking to make a toastie more interesting, Jamie suggests a variety of combinations including cheddar, Ogleshield and spring onions; cheddar, Red Leicester and smoked ham; and Lancashire cheese, Wensleydale and apricot jam.

Other combinations are cheddar, sliced tomato and pickled red onion; coolea, Westcombe cheddar, cooked onions and roast ham; and cheddar, Gruyere, smoked ham and Dijon mustard.
