In the high-pressure world of football refereeing, anonymity is often regarded a luxury. The best officials and most adept are the ones you barely notice. But, for Stuart Attwell, staying out of the headlines has never been an option.

From becoming the youngest referee in history to being at the centre of some of English football’s most debated and contentious decisions, Attwell’s journey has been anything but quiet. His name sparks reactions—sometimes admiration, often frustration.

And last season, when questioned his involvement in their crucial relegation battle, another layer was added to the scrutiny. The reason? Club allegiances.

Stuart Attwell’s rapid rise to the top

Nuneaton-born Attwell was drawn to refereeing from an early age. He worked his way through grassroots football, balancing university studies with officiating lower-league games before making the jump to professional football in 2007. Just a year later, he became the youngest referee in Premier League history at 25.

It was a meteoric rise — one that came with growing pains. Within months of his top-flight debut, Attwell was involved in the now-infamous "ghost goal" incident in a game between and . His assistant wrongly signalled for a goal when the ball had gone wide, and Attwell upheld the decision, creating one of the most baffling moments in English football history.

Despite this, he continued officiating at the highest level—until 2012, when a string of controversial decisions led to his removal from the Premier League’s elite refereeing panel. Many thought his time at the top was over. But in 2016, he returned, rebuilding his reputation in the process.

Club allegiance and the resulting controversy

Despite spending years in the public eye, Attwell’s club allegiance was rarely a topic of discussion. That was, until, Nottingham Forest brought it to the forefront, claiming the Premier League referee is a supporter,

Attwell was on VAR duties for Forest's 2-0 loss to towards the end of the 2023/24 season. The club believed they should have been awarded three penalties and, in a post on X, claimed they had warned the PGMOL about Attwell’s ties to Luton—another club battling relegation — before the match.

Despite this, he remained in charge of VAR, leading Forest to suggest that his allegiance had influenced key decisions. Forest's accusations did not go unpunished as the FA fined them £750,000 and warned them about their future conduct, reinforcing that questioning an official’s integrity in such a public manner would not be tolerated.

Controversy over Lucas Bergvall’s challenge

More recently, Attwell once again found himself at the centre of debate after ’s 1-0 win over in this season's Carabao Cup semi-finals. The spotlight fell on his decision not to send off teenage match-winner Lucas Bergvall, a call that former FIFA referee Keith Hackett described as “very poor.”

Bergvall, who netted the decisive goal in the 86th minute, was already on a yellow card when he brought down Liverpool’s with a reckless challenge just minutes earlier. Despite calls for a second booking, Attwell chose to let the 18-year-old off with a warning—an outcome that drew criticism from pundits and former officials alike.

Hackett, a former PGMOL chief, questioned Attwell’s record and insisted the decision was an obvious one. “That’s a clear second yellow,” he said, pointing to Attwell’s history of controversial calls throughout his career. While Liverpool fans were left frustrated, the decision ultimately stood, allowing Spurs to take a narrow lead into the second leg.

Stuart Attwell’s net worth and personal life

Premier League referees may be at the centre of high-profile matches, but their earnings remain modest compared to the players they officiate. According to Sporting Free, Attwell, as an experienced official, reportedly earns a base salary estimated to be between £70,000 and £200,000 per year, with an additional match fee of £1,500 for refereeing duties and £850 for assistant and video assistant referee roles.

His long-standing career in English and international football, along with officiating major fixtures, has contributed to his financial standing. ABTC reports suggest that Attwell’s net worth is around $1.5m (£1.2m) making him one of the better-compensated referees in the league.

Despite his prominence in the footballing , Attwell has managed to keep his personal life largely private. There is little public information regarding his romantic relationships.
