The Importance of Parshuram Jayanti in 2025

Lord Parshuram, one of the seven immortals, lived during the Dvapara Yuga. According to ancient tradition, a king by the name of Kartavirya Arjuna once tried to steal the sacred cow Kamdhenu from Lord Parshuram’s father, Jamadagni. Kartavirya Arjuna took the heavenly cow against Jamadagni’s wishes when he disputed this. Lord Parshuram assassinated the King out of rage. Kartavirya Arjuna’s sons killed Jamadagni in retaliation. After Jamadagni’s passing, Lord Parshuram wept and promised to purge the planet of all Kshatriyas.

He also spilled five lakes with Kshatriya blood and engaged in twenty-one battles against a Kshatriya monarch. Lord Parshuram persisted in his retaliation until Rucheeka, a wise woman, intervened. In an effort to win over Lord Shiva, Lord Parshuram undertook several acts of penance in devotion. Ultimately, Lord Shiva deemed him deserving and bestowed upon him a heavenly weapon to defend human civilization from malevolent powers.

According to another story, Lord Parshuram was about to meet Lord Shiva when he ran across Lord Ganesha, who attempted to stop him from crossing. Lord Ganesha became known as Ekdanta because Parshuram broke a tusk from his face during the battle. When Lord Parshuram encountered two other incarnations of Lord Vishnu—one in the body of Lord Rama and the other in the body of Lord Krishna—he also played a significant part in the epics that followed, the Ramayana and Mahabharat. His life exemplifies bravery, commitment, and a never-ending fight to preserve dharma.

Rituals for Parshuram Jayanti in 2025

Before starting the puja process for Parshuram Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya, devotees are required to take a bath in the early morning (before dawn), just as they are for many other holy holidays. Devotees must use flowers, kumkum, sweets, and chandan to worship the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu as part of the puja. It is particularly auspicious to present a holy sacrifice composed of tulsi leaves during the puja, since this draws heavenly benefits.

For devotees, fasting on Parashurama Jayanti has great significance. In India, Akshaya Tritiya is considered a lucky time to start new enterprises, get married, travel, or embark on new endeavors. Devotees may refrain from eating any grains or pulses during their fast and limit their diet to fruits and dairy items.

It’s crucial to remember that, in contrast to Lord Rama or Lord Krishna, Lord Parashurama is revered in some temples but is thought to still be alive. As such, he shouldn’t be often mentioned in Hindu devotion. Along India’s west coast, there are several temples devoted to him, including Pajaka’s Kusheshwara Tirtha. In the belief that their endeavors started on this auspicious day would perpetually develop, or blossom, and will continue to bring them success, wealth, and good fortune, devotees look forward to the comfort of Akshaya Tritiya each year.
