Lightspeed Venture Capital-backed startup Sarvam AI has announced that it will create India's first Generative AI (Gen-AI) platform in the coming six months. The project was announced by Union Information Technology (IT) Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Saturday.

Minister Vaishnav said that we are confident that the models developed by Sarvam AI will be able to compete with leading AI models like DeepSeek, ChatGPT globally. He further said that India will now not only be a consumer of AI technology but will also become a center of innovation and development.

How special will this AI be?

Sarvam AI co-founder Pratyush Kumar said on this occasion, "Building AI systems for India has always been central to our mission. Our research and technology are focused on empowering the country's model builders so that they can create special solutions for India." He also expressed the commitment to have the platform ready in six months, which is being considered a major achievement for the Indian tech sector.

Sarvam AI aims to create a platform that can work keeping in mind India's diverse linguistic, cultural and social contexts. Experts believe that AI models trained to suit local requirements can bring revolutionary changes in areas like digital literacy, education, health and agriculture in the country.

ChatGPTO will get competition

This initiative is also considered a strategic attempt to bring India ahead in the global AI race. Till now ChatGPT, DeepSeek and other foreign models have dominated, but with the advent of the indigenous platform, India is taking an important step toward self-reliance.

If Sarvam AI achieves its target within the stipulated time, India will not only showcase its strength in the technological sector but will also emerge as a strong player in AI innovation at the global level.
