Households may be able to save if they switch to a cheaper tariff before July, a comparison site has said. According to Uswitch, the cheapest fixed deal is £334 lower than the current price cap, and £205 less than July's.

The energy price cap, introduced in 2019 by the energy regulator Ofgem, aims to prevent service providers from making excessive profits from customers. reviews the every three months, setting a maximum amount that energy providers can charge per unit of energy based on wholesale energy prices. After rising by 6.4% in April, the price cap is set to drop by 7% in July. However, by opting for a cheaper fixed-rate energy deal, you could save even more.

Ben Gallizzi, energy expert at, said: "In the past week, we have seen several large suppliers drop their fixed rate prices to offer the best deals."

The price cap will lower average annual energy bills from £1,849 a year for a typical dual-fuel household paying by direct debit, to £1,720 on July 1.

However, according to Uswitch, the cheapest fixed tariffs are priced hundreds of pounds lower than this. Fixed deals protect customers from price rises for 12 months or more by enabling them to lock in rates.

At the time of writing, Mr Gallizzi said the cheapest fix from a large provider is EON Next's Next Fixed 12m v61 tariff at £1,585 per year. This offers £264 of savings under the current price cap, and £135 under July's cap.

Meanwhile, the cheapest fixed deal on the market is offered by Outfox the Market with its two-year Fix'd Dual Jun25 v1.0 tariff. This works out £334 cheaper than the current price cap, and £205 less than July's.

According to Ofgem, around 22 million households were still on standard variable rate tariffs - where prices track the price cap - in April. These households have been urged to compare energy tariffs using websites, such as Compare the Market or Uswitch to secure better deals.

Mr Gallizzi continued: "If you are still on a standard tariff, you can almost always save money by switching to a fixed deal. The 24 cheapest fixed tariffs on the market are already priced below the July cap. This makes it a great time to switch and save."
