Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has declared a local state of emergency in response to escalating unrest triggered by anti-ICE demonstrations.

The announcement comes after five consecutive days of protests, vandalism, and looting across downtown LA, prompting the city to enforce stricter public safety measures.

Citywide Curfew Imposed Starting June 10, 2025

Effective from 8:00 PM PDT on June 10 to 6:00 AM PDT on June 11, a nighttime curfew has been imposed for parts of downtown Los Angeles. Mayor Bass indicated that while the curfew is currently limited to one night, it may be extended depending on ongoing conditions and the extent of damage observed.

Protest Zone Curfew: Boundaries and Key Locations

The curfew applies to a concentrated 1-square-mile area of downtown Los Angeles, where much of the protest activity has occurred. The specific curfew zone is bordered by:

North: Temple Street

South: 3rd Street

East: Los Angeles Street

West: Main Street

This area encompasses high-profile locations like the Metropolitan Detention Center, Los Angeles Federal Building, and City Hall, all of which have been central to recent demonstrations.

Curfew Regulations and Penalties for Violation

During curfew hours, all public activity in the designated zone is restricted. Residents are required to remain indoors, and all non-essential businesses must shut down by 8:00 PM.

Any gatherings, including peaceful protests, are prohibited. Violators may face arrest and charges such as unlawful assembly or curfew violations, which are classified as misdemeanors.

Certain groups are exempt from the curfew, including individuals residing within the affected area, those traveling to and from work, people experiencing homelessness, and anyone seeking emergency medical care or safety. Credentialed journalists and essential service providers are also allowed to operate during curfew hours.

Multi-Agency Curfew Enforcement Across Downtown LA

The curfew will be strictly enforced by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), California Highway Patrol (CHP), and National Guard units. Authorities have confirmed the use of zip-tie arrests and other containment tactics to address curfew violations and potential threats to public safety.
