New Delhi: Early intervention is necessary to improve the growth and well-being of children with Down syndrome. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by an extra chromosome 21, affecting mental growth, physical abilities, and emotional development. While each individual with Down syndrome is unique, early educational and therapeutic intervention can make a definite impact on several areas in life.

Why is the timely detection of Down syndrome important?

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Vinit Banga, Director- Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Faridabad, spoke about the role of timely detection in Down syndrome cases.

Early life is most crucial for children’s brain development. Early intervention therapy, such as physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and special education support, can help children with Down syndrome master developmental milestones during their early years. Such therapy is typically tailored to the child’s own needs and abilities and addresses weaknesses in muscle tone, motor skills, language learning, and social skills.

Physical therapy, for example, improves muscle strength, coordination, and posture, which in most cases are delayed in Down syndrome. Speech and language therapy is also essential for the development of communication skills because the majority of these children experience delays in expressive and receptive language. Occupational therapy can help in the improvement of fine motor skill development and activities of daily living so that children will become independent.

Early intervention also benefits families through resources, guidance, and emotional support. Caregivers and parents are educated on how to engage with the child in a manner that encourages learning and development. They are also assisted in accessing healthcare and education systems, leading to an organised and efficient support system.

Studies have shown that Down syndrome who receive early intervention services have better cognitive functioning, language acquisition, and social behavior compared to those who do not attend such programs. Early intervention cannot alter the genetic disorder, yet it can greatly enhance a child’s capabilities and contribute to his or her improved quality of life. Moreover, early intervention helps to have a positive effect on long-term outcomes, including school achievement and integration into regular schools.
