Exploring the Debut of Shanaya Kapoor
A new film inspired by a classic song from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s iconic movie, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, is generating buzz, particularly due to its lead, Shanaya Kapoor, who is the daughter of actor Sanjay Kapoor. Director Santosh Singh, known for his work on various web series, is making his feature film debut with Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan and is prepared for the scrutiny that comes with it.
Singh confronts the topic of nepotism directly, arguing that it exists beyond just the film industry. He emphasizes the importance of giving everyone a fair shot, even if some have easier access to opportunities. He encourages audiences to evaluate Shanaya's acting before forming opinions. Responding to critics who claim that established actors like Vikrant Massey are used to elevate star kids, he maintains that social media users are entitled to their views but should also be prepared for criticism. He states, “If we enjoy the love from our fans, we must also accept their criticisms. Audiences will discern quality performances, regardless of an actor's background.” He urges viewers to reserve their judgments until after the film's release on July 11.
As a director, Singh expresses satisfaction with Shanaya's audition, which he received through a casting director. After several auditions, he was convinced she was right for the role of Saba Shergill. He highlights the dynamic chemistry between Vikrant, who he previously collaborated with on the web series Broken But Beautiful, and the fresh talent of Shanaya, which he believes enhances the film.
Singh asserts that the film's strength lies in its unique narrative, which is based on Ruskin Bond’s short story, The Eyes Have. He acknowledges the challenge of adapting written words to the screen, especially when the characters' primary means of expression— their eyes—are limited. Vikrant’s character, Zahan, is visually impaired, and there are scenes where Shanaya’s character is also blindfolded. He hints at the risks involved in the screenplay crafted by Mansi Bagla, which poses challenges for both the actors and the production house backing the film.
Creating a compelling love story in an era dominated by crime thrillers is no easy feat. Singh, who has worked with renowned filmmaker Karan Johar at Dharma Productions, has learned the importance of maintaining emotional depth in storytelling. He insists, “I never approve a shot until the emotional impact is just right.”
With the film's title referencing a beloved song, Singh is aware of the inevitable comparisons to Bhansali’s classic. He refrains from making direct comparisons but expresses confidence in the film's music, particularly tracks like Alvida and Nazaara. Composer Vishal Mishra has dedicated over a year and a half to crafting the original score, which is being promoted as a musical. Singh firmly believes, “A love story is incomplete without enchanting music.”
As the release date approaches, Singh invites audiences, who may have shied away from theaters, to not only fall in love with the film but to truly experience love itself.
