After almost a decade of waiting, BBC fans were thrilled when they learnt that a new series of The Night Manager was in the works.
Back in 2016, the crime drama was extremely popular as it followed ex-soldier Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) working as a night manager who found himself being recruited by a British intelligence agent, Angela Burr (Olivia Coleman).
Now, the long-awaited second series will pick up years after the explosive finale, as fans will see Jonathan as a low-level MI6 officer running a quiet surveillance unit in London called 'The Night Owls'.
This week, the BBC released an explosive trailer for the upcoming series, which they confirmed will air on January 1.
The trailer shows Jonathan in his new role, while a voiceover instructs him to 'watch, listen and report'. However, the person then sternly adds: "You do not hunt down."
Being transported to Colombia, the MI6 officer is tasked with looking into Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva), who is accused of smuggling arms into the country with the help of British Intelligence.
Now being given a new alias, Jonathan finds himself deeply embroiled in a lethal plot. It looks as though there's betrayal on the cards as he confronts Agent Burr. Stating that she 'lied' to him, she responds, "I had no choice".
A series of fast-paced shots is then shown on-screen, showing nail-biting chase scenes and Jonathan running through a building with explosives happening behind him.
While a woman is heard saying he 'played her', a chilling moment shows Jonathan being held by Teddy as he asks, 'Who are you, Matthew? Why are you really here?"
Sharing the clip on social media, fans were quick to respond to the trailer with many thrilled with its return. One person said: "Wow wow wow wow." Another added: "FINALLY!!!!"
Commenting on the show, Tom Hiddleston told the BBC: "The first series of The Night Manager was one of the most creatively fulfilling projects I have ever worked on.
"The depth, range and complexity of Jonathan Pine was, and remains, a thrilling prospect. I'm so looking forward to reuniting with Simon and Stephen Cornwell, David Farr and Stephen Garrett, and to working with Georgi Banks-Davies to tell the next chapter of our story. I can't wait."
The BBC announced that The Night Manager will also have another series after this upcoming one.
Watch the new series of The Night Manager from 1 January on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and from 11 January on Prime Video where available.
