Los Angeles Olympic chiefs are selling a million tickets at just £20 for the 2028 Games to make it an event 'for everyone'. The announcement was in stark contrast to the prices for the World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada this summer.
FIFA announced a new £45 ($60) tier for every match at World Cup 2026 after backlash from fans. But it represents 10 percent of the allocation per game for each national body and less than one percent of overall capacity for each game.
The LA prices are a welcome boost to Team GB fans. We were the second best supported team behind France at Paris 2024, with more than 1m tickets sold to 500,000 UK addresses.
Registration for LA opened at 3pm UK time on Wednesday for a random ticket draw covering all events. The window is open until mid-March. If chosen, fans will be notified via email and will be given a time slot to purchase tickets in April.
One million tickets will sell for $28 (£20), and about one-third are set to cost less than $100 (£74.41). Casey Wasserman, the chairman of LA 2028, promised: "These Games belong to everyone. These Games have to be affordable and inclusive."
LA28 chief Allison Katz-Mayfield called the random ticket-drawing system "the fairest way to ensure that the broadest number of people can get access to tickets and that no one is advantaged or disadvantaged".
She added: "No matter when you go in, whether you're the first person in or the last person in, you have the same opportunity."
Registration for tickets is open until March 18. There is no advantage to registering early. Organisers stressed that affordability was key to their drive to attract sport fans around the globe.
Tickets for the 2024 Games started at $27.95 (£20). A special early purchase window was open for residents of LA and Oklahoma City, where some events are also being held.
The 2028 Games will be the first time the 'greatest show on Earth' has been held in the US since Atlanta in 1996. LA has twice hosted the Olympics, in 1932 and 1984.
The plan is to use facilities already in place to minimise the need for construction and reduce the impact on the environment.
Event organisers, along with hundreds of Olympians and Paralympians, met at the LA Memorial Coliseum for a ceremonial lighting of the Olympic venue's cauldron ahead of the opening of ticket registration.
The Coliseum hosted events on both the previous occasions that the Olympics were held in LA, and it is set to co-host the opening ceremony along with track and field events in 2028.
Once registered, fans will be entered into the random draw for time slots to buy tickets in April. A time slot does not guarantee that tickets will be available when the slot is open. The first set of tickets will be up for purchase from April 9-19.
Admission for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games are among those on offer. Most events will be held across Los Angeles and southern California. But canoeing and softball will take place in Oklahoma.
