Daryl Mitchell was the main performer who led New Zealand toward an easy victory in Rajkot. The team from the other side reached the target in 47.3 overs with three wickets remaining. The captain of India, Shubman Gill, correctly pointed out that the Blue Men could not build up the pressure with the ball in the middle over of innings.
Shubman Gill reflects on missed chances:
Although India had a hard time with their bowling, still they managed to find ways to change the course of the game in their favor. KL Rahul in the 6th over missed a difficult chance off Harshit Rana. However, India did not suffer much as Devon Conway got bowled on the next delivery. The ball in the 25th over was not even a couple of meters away from Rohit Sharma at long-off. There were different opinions as to Ravindra Jadeja or Nitish Kumar Reddy should be there instead, as they are the only ones in the Indian team with the sharpness in fielding.
Then, in the 36th over, Jadeja failed to run a batsman out. It wasn’t an easy one, but nevertheless fans expect him to fire those. At that moment, batsman Daryl Mitchell, who eventually got out for 131, was on 75 runs. With the very next ball, Prasidh Krishna let Mitchell off the hook. In the 47th over, Prasidh also missed a difficult return catch. Certainly, by that time, the match seemed to be sealed, but still, the worry persisted. Gill was vocal about these fielding lapses in the post-match interview.
Shubman Gill said: “Even in the last match, we let down a few chances. We are always trying to get better in the field, and yes, if you don’t take your chances, you will be in trouble.”
