The Champions League clash between Atalanta and Borussia Dortmund descended into chaos in the closing stages of the game on Wednesday night. Dortmund had held a two-goal advantage heading into the second leg in Bergamo, but the Serie A outfit fought back to head into the half-time break with the tie level.

And the home side continued their momentum into the second half, with Mario Pasalic netting a third goal of the evening for Atalanta. It put them on the brink of a famous comeback, with Atalanta having never previously won a UEFA tie from two goals down heading into the second leg.

But their celebrations were put on ice when Karim Adeyemi curled home a stylish effort from the edge of the box to level things up on aggregate, with it looking like the match was destined for added time. However, drama soon followed at the New Balance Arena.

Deep into stoppage time, the hosts were awarded a penalty following a VAR review. Ramy Bensebaini caught Nikola Krstovic on the head in the box with a reckless high boot as the Atalanta forward attempted to meet a cross following a mistake by visiting keeper Gregor Kobel.

Krstovic was left with blood pouring from his head, while Bensebaini was shown a second yellow card for the foul. Nico Schlotterbeck was then shown a red card despite being on the substitutes bench for Dortmund for his reaction to the penalty being given, while a member of the Atalanta coaching staff was also sent off.

And the drama wasn't finished there, as Lazar Samardzic smashed his penalty past Gregor Kobel to send his side into the last-16 with the last kick of the game. The Italians will face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich.

Reacting to the drama, former Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers defender Stephen Warnock said: "What a penalty that was, and what a comeback by Atalanta."

Before he continued: "Atalanta had to come out and do something tonight, being 2-0 down from last week. So they have attacked it, and got their reward.

"But then Dortmund boss Niko Kovak has made changes, he has been brave - even though he has gone three goals down tonight, he knew they only had to nick a goal to get back in the tie.

"It was a game full of mistakes - including the one that led to the late penalty that settled it."
