Andre Onana wants to fight Senne Lammens for the No.1 shirt at Manchester United next season - and believes that he'll be given a chance. Onana, 29, was loaned out to Turkish side Trabzonspor in September after United signed 23-year-old Lammens from Royal Antwerp for an initial £18.2million.

Since Lammens made his debut, the Red Devils have lost just two of their 19 Premier League games. The Belgian has also kept four clean sheets, including in Monday's fraught 1-0 victory over Everton.

But his fine form hasn't deterred Onana. The Guardian report that the Cameroon international is intent on reclaiming his position as United's first-choice goalkeeper, and he's confident that whoever is in charge will give him a chance.

Onana has received mixed reviews in Turkey, producing the kind of erratic performances which were his downfall at Old Trafford. United agreed to pay Inter Milan up to £47.2m for his services in 2023, handing him a five-year contract.

With Onana due to return to Manchester this summer for pre-season training, he'll have two years left on his deal. United's other goalkeepers, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton, are both facing uncertain futures. Heaton is out of contract while Bayindir remains rooted to the bench after briefly usurping Onana at the start of this season.

Now there's no dispute over who should play in goal, with Lammens firmly holding onto the gloves. The former Antwerp star earned praise from United interim manager Michael Carrick after Monday's win at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

"You want a goalkeeper to be reliable, trustworthy and, instead of creating the chaos, you want him to take the chaos away and calm things down. I think Senne is that," Carrick hailed. "He's quite quiet at times and unassuming but he's got a real steeliness. To step in, it's a big role - for some."

Lammens was also compared to Carrick's ex-team-mate and United legend Edwin van der Sar by former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher. But Carrick wisely navigated the question when asked about Carragher's comments.

"I've got to be careful what I say," the Red Devils boss replied. "I don't want to be comparing them because I don't think it's fair to Senne. But there's definitely similarities."

Lammens will be back between the posts when United host Crystal Palace on Sunday.
