Based on the novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay

Based on Sunil Gangopadhyay’s celebrated 1968 novel, Days and Nights in the Forest is one of director Satyajit Ray’s greatest achievements. This is a story of exploration of relationships in modern times, which has the timeless resonance of a folktale.

Seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of Calcutta, four friends—Ashim (Soumitra Chatterjee), Sanjay (Shubhendu Chatterjee), Hari (Samit Bhanja) and Shekhar (Ravi Ghosh)—head to Palamu, one of India’s rural “tribal areas.” They bribe a watchman and stay in a guest house in the middle of the forest.

Although they resolve to leave everything behind and stay away, they soon begin to mix with the locals. They are introduced to a forest family—sensitive and playful Aparna (Sharmila Tagore) is attracted to the confident Ashim, while his widowed sister-in-law Jaya (Kaberi Bose) grows close to the book-loving Sanjay. Meanwhile, Hari, who has recently gone through a breakup, meets Santhal girl Duli (Simi Garewal), and Shekhar, himself a gambling addict, tries to control his friends’ drunken unruliness. Flanked by Ray’s memorable characterization and Soumendu Roy’s gorgeous black-and-white cinematography, the film presents male insecurities and Indian class discrimination with deep sensitivity and maturity.

Satyajit Ray’s sensitive film

Satyajit Ray’s almost four decade long directorial career witnessed many turning points. In 1969 he made the musical fantasy film The Adventures of Goopy and Bagha, based on a story by his grandfather Upendrakishore Roy Choudhury. Earlier, Ray was known for sensitive and realistic films.

He then made Days and Nights in the Forest in 1970, which was again a return to quiet, humane drama. According to British scholar Andrew Robinson, Ray had purchased the film rights to Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novel on the basis of a magazine advertisement.

Ray made several changes to the story. In the novel, four unemployed youths go to the forest by train, but in the film, three have been given jobs and they go to Palamu by car. Due to this, his characters represent the middle-class Calcutta society and not vagabond youth. Western influence and class discrimination are also reflected in their behaviour.

Ray made the characters more complex and modern. The film reflects the loneliness, despair and insecurity of India’s new urban youth. Western critics praised it highly, calling it a film with an almost “European perspective”.
