Skirting boards are often an area of your home that is overlooked during regular cleaning routines. However, they play a crucial role in maintaining your home's appeal. Over time, just like wooden floors, skirting boards can accumulate dust, dirt, and grime, which not only looks unsightly but can also affect the overall cleanliness of your living space.

With it now being spring, this is a major time for dust to settle around our home. Pollen, animal hair, shedding skin and open windows all contribute to a household's dust collection during spring months. To remove and repel dust from your skirting boards, lover of cleaning hacks Becki May, who goes by @athome_bb on Instagram, says fabric conditioner is the answer.

The idea behind fabric softener is that it leaves a thin antistatic layer which repels dust, dirt and hair.

This laundry staple contains cationic surfactants, which leave a conditioned finish behind. In the same way that it works on your clothes and washing, reducing static natures, it also stops dust from clinging to skirting boards.

Not only does this handy cleaning hack work well for homes that get extremely dusty, but your skirting boards will likely smell great, too.

Becki captioned her video: "I wish I knew this sooner. One quick trick and the dust just doesn't stick like it used to.

"Perfect if you hate constantly cleaning or have pets running around. Do this once and your skirting boards stay dust-free for weeks."

Becki shared that all you have to do for this cleaning hack to "act as a dust repellent" is mix one part fabric conditioner with three parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto a microfibre cloth and wipe over your skirting boards.

Flooring experts at Tapi also agree with this method. They said, "Did you know you can use fabric softener to clean skirting boards? This method not only cleans but also leaves a pleasant scent."

For this method, they recommend mixing one part fabric softener with four parts water in a spray bottle, then spraying onto your skirting boards and wiping clean with a microfibre cloth.
