ATM Problem: It often happens that when we go to withdraw money from an ATM, no cash is dispensed, yet we receive a notification stating that the amount has been debited from our account. In such a situation, here is what you should do and how you can get your money back.
ATM Problem: These days, everyone is making digital payments. Most people do not keep cash at home and rush to an ATM whenever the need arises. The trouble begins when the ATM itself fails to cooperate—meaning you receive a transaction notification, but not a single penny ends up in your hands. In such instances, the average person becomes distressed, wondering what steps to take next. The pressing questions that arise are: Where exactly did the money go, and how can it be recovered?
It is important to note that, according to the regulations set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks are required to re-credit the deducted amount to the customer’s account within 7 working days from the date of the failed transaction. To facilitate this, you simply need to follow the steps outlined below.
Wait for 24 Hours
Often, due to technical glitches or network disruptions, the cash gets stuck inside the machine. In such cases, you simply need to wait for 24 hours. The bank will automatically refund or credit the full amount back to your account within this 24-hour window. Just keep checking your bank statement.
Preserve the Transaction Slip
If money has been debited despite a failed transaction—and you did not receive any cash—your first priority should be to carefully preserve the transaction slip issued by the ATM. This slip contains the Transaction ID and the ATM ID, which are essential details you will need later to file a formal complaint.
How to File a Complaint?
Immediately call your bank’s customer care helpline. Provide them with the details regarding the time and date of the transaction, the ATM’s location, the Transaction ID, and the specific amount involved. Ensure you make a note of the complaint reference number provided to you. If the issue cannot be resolved over the phone, visit your home branch in person, fill out the necessary form, and submit a written complaint. Make sure to retain a copy of the acknowledgment receipt and the complaint reference number for your records.
