Friends, in today’s modern era, Google Chrome is the world’s largest search engine, which is used by everyone for some question or the other, but recently CERT-In, which is a cyber security agency working under the Government of India, has issued a serious warning to millions of Google Chrome users. Several serious security vulnerabilities have been found in the desktop version of the browser, which cyber criminals can take advantage of to target users’ systems. These vulnerabilities allow hackers to steal sensitive information and run harmful code remotely.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), working under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has reported that several high-risk vulnerabilities have been found in Google Chrome’s desktop browser. These vulnerabilities affect users who use the browser on Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.
Attackers can exploit these vulnerabilities to bypass security, execute arbitrary code, and gain unauthorized access to sensitive information on the device. In severe cases, these vulnerabilities may cause the browser to crash or cause a Denial of Service situation.
Older versions of Chrome are most at risk
CERT-In has specifically warned that users who are using older versions of Google Chrome are most at risk. Affected versions include:
Chrome versions older than 148.0.7778.178 on Linux
Chrome versions older than 148.0.7778.178 or 179 on Windows and Mac
Researchers have found that these vulnerabilities exist in several critical parts of the browser, including WebRTC, GPU, QUIC, XR, and other internal systems.
Cybercriminals can take advantage of these vulnerabilities by directing users to malicious websites or tricking them into clicking on fake links. Once such a link is opened, hackers can inject malware, steal personal information, or compromise the entire system.
