Amid reports of Shreyas Iyer becoming the upcoming T20 captain, the former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels that Jasprit Bumrah deserves the seat. Manjrekar believes that the Indian fast bowler should be the next captain despite having his injury issues.

Speaking on his social media, Manjrekar first of all called it pointless to remove Suryakumar Yadav, especially having the upcoming T20 World Cup in the corner. However, if SKY really needs to be dropped, Majrekar votes for Bumrah. Explaining his POV, Manjrekar said,

"Jasprit Bumrah is my first choice. Let us not dwell too much on his fitness and injuries, because this is the T20 format, where he can commit himself more. So, I believe in T20Is, he will be happy to captain, plus Mumbai Indians might be looking at him as the future leader."

The other person on Majrekar's radar is Shubman Gill, the current Test and ODI captain.

"The other person who has put himself in contention now is Shubman Gill. We have to remember one thing, the next T20 World Cup isn’t going to be in India and a lot of T20Is are going to be played outside India. That’s where people like Shubman Gill, with certain batting fundamentals, become an important player in T20Is."

Who will be the next T20I captain for India?

The current T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, is likely to be sacked from his captaincy and also dropped from the side. Despite winning India the 2026 T20I World Cup, his form with the bat is the utmost concern- a reason he will probably not be considered.

Among the names who were considered as his successor, Shreyas Iyer stands as the strongest one if head coach Gautam Gambhir supports him. Other names like Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, and even Shubman Gill are in contention.

Jasprit Bumrah on captaincy

Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah revealed that he declined India's Test captaincy after Rohit Sharma's retirement, despite being the BCCI's first-choice candidate. Citing workload management and concerns over his back injury, Bumrah felt he could not commit to an entire Test series. He preferred team stability over rotating leadership and chose to focus on contributing as India's lead fast bowler.
