Mason Greenwood may play a key role in shaping Manchester United’s transfer activities during the summer of 2026.
In the summer of 2024, the forward departed United to join Olympique Marseille in a deal valued at up to €31.6 million (£27.2 million). Significantly, INEOS ensured a 50 percent sell-on clause was included in that agreement.
This summer, Greenwood is widely expected to leave the Orange Vélodrome.
The attacker has been linked with several major clubs, with reports suggesting interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Fenerbahce.
Marseille are believed to be demanding at least €55 million for the 24-year-old United academy graduate — a price that appears justified given his outstanding performance last season. Across 32 league matches, Greenwood netted 16 goals and contributed seven assists.
Those numbers might imply Marseille would want to keep him, yet reports indicate that Greenwood’s relationship with the dressing room has deteriorated in recent months. Despite being arguably their standout performer, both the club and the player seem eager to part ways.
According to Corriere dello Sport, AS Roma have now emerged as the frontrunners to secure Greenwood’s signature, overtaking both Tottenham and Fenerbahce in the race.
The report claims that personal terms have already been settled:
“Roma’s confidence mainly comes from consistent and positive communication with the striker’s father, who also acts as his agent. Continuous dialogue and detailed discussions have established a strong understanding between the two parties. The proposed salary is substantial — exceeding €4 million net per season plus bonuses, with potential increases over time.”
With the player’s personal terms reportedly agreed, the Italian publication adds that Roma plan to “accelerate negotiations to avoid a prolonged transfer saga.”
Although Roma are not yet willing to meet Marseille’s full asking price, the report notes that their “initial offer will be cautious yet meaningful — around €40 million including bonuses. While this may not suffice, it signals the seriousness of Roma’s intentions.”
An official bid from Roma would likely bring both clubs to the negotiation table, where discussions could advance quickly toward a potential agreement.
If a transfer is completed, it would be welcome news for Manchester United. The Red Devils would receive 50 percent of the fee under the sell-on clause, providing INEOS with a significant financial boost for their summer spending plans as they work to strengthen Michael Carrick’s squad.
