According to religious beliefs, lighting a lamp in the home temple both in the morning and evening is considered auspicious. Lighting a lamp at sunrise in the morning starts the day with positive energy. At the same time, lighting a lamp after sunset in the evening is considered to bring happiness, peace and prosperity in the house. Especially evening time i.e. the time of meeting of day and night is considered most auspicious for worship and lamp donation. Lighting a lamp at this time removes negative energy.
In religious texts, a lamp made of pure cow's ghee is considered the most auspicious. It is believed that by lighting a ghee lamp one gets special blessings from the Gods and Goddesses. At the same time, mustard oil lamp is also considered auspicious and it is especially used in the worship of Shani Dev, Hanuman ji and ancestors. Sesame oil lamp is also used in many religious functions. However, the oil or ghee used for puja should be pure and clean.
The lamp should always be kept in a clean place in the puja room. Before lighting the lamp, remember God and keep your mind calm. Try to keep the lamp burning till the puja is completed. The lamp wick should also be made properly. Many people use cotton wicks, which are considered auspicious from religious point of view. One should avoid blowing to extinguish the lamp. If for some reason it is necessary to extinguish a lamp, it is considered better to extinguish a flower.
According to Vastu and religious beliefs, it is considered auspicious to keep the lamp towards east or north direction in the puja room. It is said that keeping a lamp towards the east increases knowledge and positivity, while the north direction is considered to be associated with wealth and prosperity.
