In ayurveda appetite is governed by Agnee. It is termed has Jaragani or the digestive fire which regulates digestion, absorption, metabolism and tissue nourishment. Loss of appetite, called Agni Mandya, is considered a disturbance of digestion caused by an imbalance of the doṣas, resulting from physical or psychological factors, or blockage of the Srotas (physiological channels) through which Rasa Dhatu (nutrients) and Prana (life force) flow. Due to these factors, Agni becomes weak, reducing tissue metabolism. This results from doṣic imbalance, accumulation of Āma (metabolic toxins), and impaired gut motility.

Ayurvedic management aims not merely to stimulate hunger, but to restore digestive intelligence through Deepana (enhancing digestive fire), Pachana (clearing toxins), balancing Vāta and Kapha, normalizing circadian digestive rhythms, improving enzyme secretion, and correcting autonomic dysregulation by consuming foods rich in prebiotic and probiotic qualities to improve the gut microbiome.
