Vehicles Exchange Real-Time Warnings: To curb the increasing number of road accidents in the country, the central government is preparing to implement new technology. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed implementing a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication system. This technology will allow vehicles on the road to send vital information to each other, significantly reducing the risk of accidents. Let’s explore how this system works.

What is V2V communication system?

V2V i.e. Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication is a modern system in which vehicles moving nearby share information directly with each other.

This system instantly transmits important information like vehicle speed, direction, location and braking to other vehicles, so that the driver can be alert in time.

How will it work?

If the car ahead of you suddenly brakes, the V2V system will send an immediate alert to your vehicle. This will alert you to the danger ahead of time, allowing you to apply the brakes in time. Furthermore, the system will also provide advance warning if a vehicle suddenly changes lanes, there’s a vehicle in a blind spot, or an emergency vehicle like an ambulance or fire brigade is passing nearby.

It will help in reducing accidents

The government believes that most road accidents in the country are caused by minor driver errors. V2V systems can help reduce these accidents by providing timely hazard alerts. In the future, this system could also be integrated with smart safety features like automatic braking and ADAS.

When will the new rules come into effect?

The Ministry of Transport has proposed changes to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Under this rule, vehicles in the L, M, and N categories manufactured on or after October 1, 2027, equipped with V2V systems will be required to comply with AIS-230 regulations. Furthermore, from October 1, 2028, it is proposed to make it mandatory for all new vehicles in these categories to have V2V systems in accordance with AIS-230.
