Many people face the problem of cracked and dry heels during the winter. Some individuals experience this problem in every season. It’s not just the weather, but also some common carelessness that can be responsible. When the air humidity drops, the skin also begins to lose moisture. This is normal when living in air conditioned air or during cold weather. However, if moisturized, heels can become rough and cracked.
Besides winter, this problem can also arise from prolonged standing or neglect of heel care. Initially, the heels remain dry, but if not addressed promptly, deep cracks can develop, causing pain. In severe cases, the heels may even bleed.
Some common causes of cracked heels include: excessive bathing, exposure to dry weather, standing on hard floors for long periods of time, walking barefoot, wearing ill-fitting shoes, obesity, loss of skin elasticity with aging, and certain diseases such as hypothyroidism or diabetes.
Certain habits can also cause cracked heels, such as using metal scrubbers, bathing in very hot water, wearing hard footwear, and not using moisturizer after bathing.
Overweight people and those who stand for long periods of time, such as factory workers, teachers, and salespeople, are more likely to develop cracked heels. People with diabetes and skin conditions like eczema may also develop this problem.
Women often wear open sandals, which don’t cover their heels. Working in water for extended periods can also aggravate the problem. Genetics and hormonal changes can also contribute to this problem.
There are several measures you can take to prevent cracked heels. Apply a moisturizer containing ingredients like glycerin, urea, and lactic acid to your heels twice a day. After bathing, be sure to wipe your feet and apply moisturizer. Scrub your heels with a pumice stone once or twice a week. Avoid walking barefoot and drink plenty of water. Remember to apply foot cream before going to bed.
If there are serious problems with the heels, such as deep cracks or bleeding, contact a dermatologist immediately.
