The picture of which Indian film will become the official entry in the Best International Feature Film category at Oscars 2027 is not clear yet, but the race for films has started.

Entertainment News: Discussion has intensified in the film industry regarding which film will be sent by India as the official entry for the 98th Academy Awards. Although the name of any film has not been approved yet, the process of selecting India's Oscar entry has started. Film Federation of India (FFI) President Abhay Singh has shared important information regarding the selection process, screening and possible date of announcement.

This time an Indian film will be sent for Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category. For this, entries are being invited from eligible films made in the country. As per the procedure prescribed by FFI, the last date for submission of films has been kept as 7 September 2026. Information has been given that the screening of films will start from the next day i.e. 8th September.

Films will be submitted till 7th September

According to FFI President Abhay Singh, entries of films have started coming in for India's Oscar entry. However, it is not yet clear how many films will be included in the selection process this year. He told that films can be submitted till September 7. Only after the deadline ends, it will be clear how many films are in competition for India's official Oscar entry.

The more films included in the selection process, the wider the competition. After this the screening and evaluation phase of eligible films will begin.

Screening will start from September 8

A jury will be constituted by FFI for the screening of films. This jury will look at the films selected for selection and consider their various aspects. Abhay Singh clarified that it is too early to consider any one film as a possible winner. First all eligible films have to appear before the jury. After the screening, the jury members will discuss among themselves and on this basis will select the film to be sent by India to the Oscars.

He also indicated that it would not be appropriate to speculate about any particular language, genre or name of the film right now. The final decision will be taken only after watching the films and evaluation by the jury.

The name of India's Oscar entry will be revealed on September 19.

The name of the film selected by India for Oscar 2027 is planned to be announced on 19 September 2026. That means film lovers and the industry will have to wait till mid-September to know India's official entry. After formation of the jury and screening, the final film will be selected through discussion and decision process among the members. FFI will take this entire process forward to decide India's official entry.

There is no fixed formula for selection

The biggest question regarding selecting an Indian film for the Oscars is on what basis will the jury give priority to a film. Regarding this, Abhay Singh said that it would not be right to talk about any one specific parameter or formula right now. According to him, only after watching all the films it can be decided which film is best suited to represent India on the international stage.

This means that no foregone conclusions can be drawn just by looking at a film's language, genre, popularity or box office performance. The jury will take a decision on the basis of group discussion after watching the films.
