Devdutt Padikkal continued his impressive run in Sri Lanka, scoring yet another Test century as India ended the opening day of the second Test at 300 for 5.
India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat, but the visitors lost KL Rahul cheaply for 18. Yashasvi Jaiswal looked promising before falling five runs short of a half-century.
Padikkal then anchored the innings with a composed 117, registering his second century of the series. Gill contributed a steady 50, while Ravindra Jadeja added 43 to strengthen India’s position.
For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando was the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets for 46 runs.
