Trichy: With the goods handled at Trichy international airport steadily increasing, exporters have asked the authorities to expand the export cargo terminal in the airport.

Export Import Federation Trichy (EIFT) convened an annual general body meeting on Saturday. Members sought redevelopment of the existing cargo handling space into a modern cargo terminal facility with an air-conditioned floor and cold storage facilities.

In Aug, Trichy airport handled 721 MT of cargo, the highest in a month in seven years. The domestic air cargo operations from the new integrated passenger terminal building also began last month. About 2.4 tonnes of freight were sent on the first day.

With these developments, EIFT members sought improvement in facilities at the airport too. “Temperature-controlled facility is needed to benefit exporters in maintaining the quality of perishable items such as fruits and vegetables. A district-level export promotion committee is a long-pending demand,” N Kanagasabapathy , founder-president, EIFT, said.

While welcoming the in-principle approval for setting up a dry port in Trichy , the body passed a resolution to expedite the work for a multi-modal logistics hub with a dry port. It also sought updates on a food quality testing lab proposed by Tamil Nadu Food Processing and Agri Export Corporation in Trichy at Rs 7.6 crore.
