LUCKNOW: Three children drowned while bathing in a rainwater-filled pit at Baina village under Kursi police station area of Barabanki on Sunday evening. The deceased were identified as Deva (13), Sumit (10) and Divyansh (15).

According to police and residents, a deep pit had been dug on the premises of an under-construction factory for excavation work. It filled with rainwater following heavy showers in the area.

The three children had gone to the pit along with other children around 4pm and entered the water. They ventured into a deeper portion and began drowning, prompting the other children to raise an alarm.

Hearing their cries, villagers rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. Deva and Sumit were pulled out of the water and rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Divyansh could not be traced initially. Kursi police reached the spot along with local divers and launched a search operation. As darkness set in, lights were arranged to facilitate the search. After an extensive operation, divers recovered Divyansh’s body from the pit.

The bodies were taken into police custody and sent for post-mortem examination.

Fatehpur sub-divisional magistrate Kartikeya Singh also reached the spot and inspected the site following the incident.

The deaths triggered grief in Baina village, with the families breaking down after receiving the bodies. Police said further proceedings were underway.
