Punjab News: Dr. located in Mohali, Punjab. 110 new posts of Junior Resident (JR) have been approved to strengthen medical education and health services in BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS). After the approval of Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, the number of sanctioned posts of Junior Resident in the institute will increase from 97 to 207.

Postgraduate admission increased in AIMS Mohali

According to the information, AIMS Mohali has received affiliation approval from Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) and National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) in 24 departments. After this the annual number of postgraduate medical seats in the institute has increased to 69. Considering the three-year training cycle, the institute requires a total strength of 207 postgraduate and junior resident doctors.

At present 97 Junior Resident posts are sanctioned in the institute. At the same time, based on the admission of 38 academic residents every year, the current resident number in the three-year training cycle is reported to be 114.

147 JR required in 2026-27

According to the government, the requirement of Junior Residents will increase in a phased manner due to new postgraduate courses and expansion of departments. The requirement of 147 Junior Residents is estimated for the academic session 2026-27, 177 for 2027-28 and 207 for 2028-29. To meet this immediate need, 110 new posts have been sanctioned.

Clinical services should not be affected due to shortage of doctors

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that in the current academic session, seven regular/post-diploma Junior Residents are going to leave the post after completing their tenure. Of these, six doctors will complete their tenure in October 2026 and one doctor in December 2026.

In such a situation, the purpose of approval of new posts is to maintain the availability of resident doctors in the institute and to avoid any hindrance in clinical services and patient care.

Emphasis on strengthening medical education and health services

The Finance Minister said that the proposal sent by the Department of Medical Education and Research has been approved with the aim that adequate expert human resources are available in the major government medical institutions of the state. Along with this, emphasis is also being laid on strengthening medical training facilities and health services available to the common people.
