AMBALA: A court in Ambala on Thursday sentenced an accused in a 2018 acid attack case to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.
Additional Sessions Judge Arvind Kumar Bansal pronounced the judgment in the case registered at Baldev Nagar police station on October 5, 2018.
According to police, the case was registered on a complaint by Jatin, a resident of Hisar, who alleged that unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants had attacked his sister with acid. She suffered severe burns to her face and body, while the attackers fled the spot.
During the investigation, Ambala Police arrested Arun Kumar, a resident of Hansi, in connection with the case. The prosecution presented witness statements and scientific evidence before the court, police said.
After hearing arguments from both sides and examining the evidence and witness statements, the court convicted Arun Kumar and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. It also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000. In case of non-payment of the fine, Kumar will undergo an additional year of imprisonment.
Ambala Police said the conviction followed its investigation and prosecution of the case and reiterated its commitment to taking legal action in cases involving crimes against women and children.
The police also said the judgment would reinforce public confidence in the criminal justice system and that strict legal action would be taken against those accused of serious offences.
