Francis Ford Coppola’s big-budget film Megalopolis is coming back to theaters for a limited run later this month. The rerelease comes after the sci-fi film’s disappointing box office run and mixed critical reception in 2024.

The limited theatrical release takes place for one day on October 24 at nationwide cinemas, Deadline reports. The single-day screening will feature a live-streamed Q&A with Coppola, moderated by his son and second unit director of the film, Roman Coppola. Audience members can text questions before, during, and after the film, and Coppola will answer the best ones live.

Attendees will also receive a printed letter containing his director’s statement, and screenings will feature the film’s distinctive “Live Element.” Coppola plans to bring it back to theaters periodically, including on New Year’s Day each year. The upcoming event will mark another theatrical rerelease following its return earlier this year.

What did critics think about Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis

Critics gave mixed and deeply polarized reviews following the film’s release. While some praised its ambition and visual style, others described the narrative as chaotic, confusing, and overstuffed.

The R-rated film currently holds a 46% Tomatometer score and 34% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critic consensus on the website reads, “More of a creative manifesto than a cogent narrative feature, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis is an overstuffed opus that’s equal parts stimulating and slapdash.”

News rated the movie 1/10 in its review. Jonathan Sim called it “one of the biggest misfires I’ve ever seen.” The review also described the film as “cinema’s most beautiful disaster,” while acknowledging Coppola’s ambition and willingness to take creative risks.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker self-financed the feature and chose not to put it on U.S. streaming services or DVD produced for the U.S. market. He spent around $120 million on the film without a studio backing it. Distributed by Lionsgate, the high-profile film only grossed more than $12 million at the global box office, according to The Numbers.
