Wellington, October 27. Abhishek Sharma’s explosive batting left New Zealand’s bowlers helpless as India defeated New Zealand by six wickets with 40 balls remaining in the third T20 international match on Tuesday, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

The world’s top-ranked T20 batsman, Abhishek, played an incredible innings of 113 runs off just 38 balls, completing his half-century in just 15 balls and dismantling New Zealand’s bowling attack. India chased down the challenging target of 199 runs in just 13.2 overs, losing four wickets. Abhishek’s explosive innings overshadowed the impressive batting of young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who scored 45 runs off 19 balls.

Abhishek completed his century in 35 balls and celebrated in his signature style by assuming a meditative pose. With this victory, India achieved the feat of winning their third consecutive T20 international series on New Zealand soil, having previously won 5-0 in 2020 and 1-0 in 2022. The 15-year-old Suryavanshi also played aggressively, and together they took the Indian team past 100 runs in five overs, setting a record of 118 runs in the six overs of the powerplay.

India also set the world record for the fastest team century in five overs and the highest score during the powerplay in T20 internationals. Abhishek and Suryavanshi added 133 runs for the first wicket in just seven overs, a partnership that will be remembered by the spectators at the Westpac Trust Stadium in Wellington for a long time. The two batsmen hit a total of 12 sixes, with Suryavanshi hitting four and Abhishek hitting eight.

By the time Glenn Phillips caught Abhishek’s catch, the Indian batsman had already hit 11 sixes and nine fours. After Abhishek’s wicket, the morale of the New Zealand team was so low that their players did not seem excited to celebrate the wicket. India’s innings began with 26 runs in Jacob Duffy’s over.

Adam Milne conceded 17 runs in the second over. Following that, Michael Bracewell and Kyle Jamieson gave away 21 and 20 runs, respectively. Within four overs, the helplessness was clearly visible on the face of New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner.

The pitch that was stopping the ball during New Zealand’s innings appeared very flat in front of the Indian batsmen. Abhishek and Suryavanshi created space on the off side or made powerful strikes on the leg side according to the direction of the ball. Abhishek’s shots were so powerful that they overshadowed Suryavanshi’s brilliance, although this young batsman also showcased his talent with several excellent shots.

Earlier, New Zealand set a challenging score of 198 runs for three wickets, thanks to Daryl Mitchell’s aggressive batting. Recovering from poor form, Mitchell scored an unbeaten 89 runs off just 52 balls, hitting five sixes and as many fours. Although Indian bowlers were not very effective in taking wickets, they bowled tightly in the last five overs, conceding only 52 runs.

Indian captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss for the third consecutive time and invited New Zealand to bat first. Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh took one wicket for 33 runs in four overs, dismissing Tim Seifert early in the second over. Following that, Finn Allen and Mitchell adopted an aggressive approach, adding 86 runs for the second wicket to strengthen New Zealand’s innings.

Allen scored 40 runs off 25 balls, indicating his intentions by hitting two sixes in Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s opening over. Bhuvneshwar conceded 40 runs in four overs and struggled to find the right length throughout the match. However, his 18th over was better, where he bowled consecutive yorkers, which could boost his confidence for upcoming matches.

Allen first sent Bhuvneshwar’s delivery over long-on for six and then hit another six over deep midwicket. He then sent a ball outside off stump from Prince Yadav over square leg for another six. Mitchell also found his rhythm, hitting some attractive fours, including a brilliant ramp shot off Prince’s delivery.

Nitish Kumar Reddy ended Allen’s aggressive innings, as Allen attempted a big shot off Reddy’s delivery and was caught by Naman Dheer. Axar Patel dealt a big blow to New Zealand by dismissing the in-form Glenn Phillips for 17 runs. Axar took one wicket for 36 runs in four overs and took a brilliant catch off his own bowling.

Mitchell then received good support from Bevan Jacobs, who scored an unbeaten 39 runs off 23 balls. Together, they added 75 runs for the fourth wicket in eight overs, putting New Zealand in a strong position.
