With the rise of people craving more “unique” names, it can lead to some awkward conversations among and friends. This was the case for one mum who thought she’d “heard it all” when it came to “bizarre baby names” until learning her pregnant cousin plans to name her daughter “Fructane”.

The perplexed mum’s cousin is “dead set” on the unusual name, and believes it “sounds mystical”, plus, she’s “convinced it means ‘fruitful’”.

The mum tried “gently suggesting” Fructane sounds “a bit too much like ‘fructose’ or ‘fruit cane’” – but her cousin disagrees, thinking it’s “elegant” and “will help her stand out.” Her partner is also on her side, so the name is “a done deal”.

The entire family, however, is on the mum’s side and they’re already worrying about teachers and other people struggling with the pronunciation of the name. On , the mum penned: “Am I totally off base to think this is going to be a lifetime of awkward introductions and fruity nicknames? Part of me hopes they do one of those last-minute name swaps but they’re already practicing how they’ll announce, ‘Welcome baby Fructane!’

“Wish me luck in gently telling them… maybe, just maybe it’s not the best idea. Or am I just supposed to let them live their baby-naming dream or jump off a cliff”.

Hundreds of people were keen to share their thoughts in the comments section. One person said: “It sounds like vehicle fuel made from fruit.”

Another suggested: “Ask your sister if she is familiar with ‘high octane fuel’. Then ask her if she’s familiar with ‘high fructose corn syrup’. She’s naming her child after a fuel made from corn byproducts. Super mystical.”

A third said: “Tell her to it. It looks close enough to fructan that that is what people are going to think of. ‘Some people have difficulty digesting fructans, which can cause bloating, diarrhea, gas, and stomach pain.’ It doesn’t sound mystical or elegant to me.”

So what do you think using ‘Fructane’ as a name for a baby girl, would you consider it? Let us know in the comments section below.
