London According to a recent research, global warming has caused the number of days that the world’s seas experience severe surface temperatures to treble during the last 80 years.
According to Xinhua news agency, researchers discovered that during the 1940s, there were, on average, 15 days of intense heat each year on the world’s sea surface.
According to a research that was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, that number has now increased to about 50 days annually.
Nearly 50% of marine heatwaves—times when sea surface temperatures increase significantly above average for a sustained period of time—are caused by global warming.
The study, which was conducted by a group of researchers from the University of Reading, the International Space Science Institute, the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies, and the University of the Balearic Islands, also discovered that extreme ocean heat events are becoming more intense and lasting longer due to rising global temperatures.
Underwater habitats may be devastated by marine heatwaves. According to Xiangbo Feng, a co-author of the research from the University of Reading’s National Centre for Atmospheric Science, “long stretches of abnormally warm water can kill coral reefs, destroy kelp forests, and harm seagrass meadows.”
Marine heat waves have effects outside of the water. The study cautions that more frequent and intense tropical storms may occur in certain areas as a result of our atmosphere being less stable due to a rise in marine heatwaves.
Marine heatwaves will grow more frequent and intense as global temperatures increase, further taxing already overburdened ocean ecosystems. The report urged immediate climate action to save marine habitats, pointing out that human activity is radically altering seas.
