The 29th series of Silent Witness launched on BBC One earlier this month, delighting audiences across the country. Leading actors Emilia Fox and David Caves have returned to their roles as Dr Nikki Alexander and Jack Hodgson, joined by Maggie Steed and Fran Mills as Harriet Maven and Kit Brooks.
The programme has now relocated to Birmingham, featuring five compelling new cases broadcast across ten episodes. Silent Witness recently experienced multiple scheduling adjustments, after the latest instalments were withdrawn from transmission last week following a terrible incident that occurred in Birmingham.
A BBC spokesperson informed TV Guide at the time: "Due to the attack in Birmingham over the weekend, this week's episodes of Silent Witness will not transmit as planned and instead they have been replaced with two episodes from later on in the series."
Just days after the postponed episodes were shown on BBC One, the beloved drama reached a significant landmark, marking its 30th anniversary on Saturday (February 21), reports the Mirror.
The programme, created by Nigel McCrery, debuted on 21 February 1996. Prior to Emilia Fox captivating viewers as Nikki, Amanda Burton portrayed the principal character, Dr Sam Ryan.
The inaugural episode featured Sam returning to Cambridge to undertake a teaching position and assist the police. In her opening case, she investigated the death of a six-year-old girl, whose body had been discovered floating in a local river. Alongside examining the cause of death, Sam was also required to care for her ageing mother, Beryl (Doreen Hepburn), who was displaying symptoms of dementia, and navigate her difficult relationship with her sister, Wyn (Ruth McCabe).
BBC audiences have subsequently flocked to X (formerly Twitter) to mark the programme's milestone, with one viewer posting: "Happy 30th anniversary to Silent Witness! A show that has brought more joy and heartache in one episode than any other show I know!! We're the best family!"
Another commented: "Happy 30th Anniversary #SilentWitness. I started about halfway through from the beginning during my early teens. My mum watched every series, so I then started watching with her and have continued to watch. Even more now in memory of her. Such an amazing, majestic show."

A third viewer remarked: "Happy 30th birthday to #SilentWitness and to the show that has been the biggest comfort blanket for so many years! Growing up with it has been the best, and I'm so grateful it provides light in the darkest of times! Long live the memories we made and here's to many more."
A fourth admirer shared similar feelings, stating: "With #SilentWitness reaching its extraordinary 30th series next year (and hopefully many more), I hope they do something special for it like they did the 25th."
To mark its 25th anniversary, the show reunited viewers with original lead actress Amanda. The milestone series comprised six episodes, seeing Sam Ryan return to work beside current lead Emilia Fox.
