There is nothing better than biting into a scone piled high with cream and jam, but I have often wondered which supermarket is the best to buy these baked goods. Spring is almost here, and I am really looking forward to enjoying a scone with a cup of tea in the garden while appreciating the warmer weather.
With Easter approaching, I decided to visit several local supermarkets to find out which scones were truly the tastiest. I bought scones from Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Morrisons, and Marks & Spencer to see whether there were noticeable differences in quality. Although the prices varied, with Lidl being the cheapest and Morrisons the most expensive, I ended up being really surprised by which supermarket produced the best scone, as it is a shop I rarely go to.
The Tesco scones were very sweet and tasted amazing, but they are in last place because of their texture, as they could not be picked up without breaking into tiny pieces.
They were incredibly crumbly, and it was almost impossible to spread jam or cream on them without falling apart. When I tried to eat one, I ended up getting half of it down my T-shirt and all over the kitchen counter, as they were just too fragile.
I ended up getting crumbs everywhere just trying to eat these scones, so while they are very tasty, I recommend avoiding them as they are quite awkward to eat.
I usually love Aldi, but after trying their scones, I do not think their bakery items are as high-quality as their other food items.
The scones were really dense and floury, like eating a bread roll, which felt too heavy for a dessert to pair with a cup of tea. They did not fall apart but were quite dry, so I do not think I would buy them ever again, as they did not have the tender texture you would expect from a scone.
Lidl's scones were the cheapest out of the lot, and I felt they were pretty good value for money as they tasted perfectly fine, but were just a bit average.
They had a good structure and were slightly sweet, but there was nothing really remarkable about them. I do not think they were as tasty as some of the other scones on the list, so I placed them right in the middle of my rating.
When I first opened the M&S scones, my first impression was that they looked utterly bizarre, as I had never seen a scone look so wrinkly.
They had a really odd, spongy, and cake-like texture which I had never seen before on a scone, but I quickly realised that you should not judge by appearances, as they tasted incredible.
These scones were flaky and fluffy, with a rich taste that I absolutely loved. Marks and Spencer's scones were brilliantly indulgent, and I highly recommend them, but they were not the best scones on this list.
In my opinion, the Morrisons scones were the clear winner and well worth the price if you are looking for the perfect sweet treat to enjoy with your afternoon tea.
They had a really buttery taste without feeling heavy, with a soft yet sturdy texture. I felt they were tender without being dry or crumbly like some of the other scones.
I could pile a generous amount of cream and jam on these scones without worrying they would fall apart, and they almost seemed to melt in my mouth when I bit into them.
Although slightly more expensive than the other supermarket brands, they offered better value overall, as the pack contained six scones, whereas the others contained only four.
These were by far my favourite. I do not usually shop at Morrisons, but after trying these, that will definitely change, as I absolutely loved them.
