The fifteenth series of Call the Midwife concludes tonight, with viewers anxiously awaiting news on the future of Nonnatus House and the deteriorating health of Sister Monica Joan (portrayed by Judy Parfitt).
Earlier in the series, Sister Monica Joan was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, a condition for which there is no cure.
The summary for the final episode of Call the Midwife states, "Sister Veronica must decide her future now she is not currently a nun, but not fully part of the world either.
"The Maternity Home prepares to close its doors, but Dr Turner is determined to preserve equipment and resources for his patients until the last possible moment. The Mullucks fight for the rights of all Thalidomide victims, whilst Cyril and Rosalind prepare for their wedding."
Call the Midwife will be broadcast at 8pm this evening, leaving many fans curious about which show will fill its slot in next weekend's television schedule, reports the Mirror.
On the following Sunday, March 15, The Other Bennet Sister will be shown in place of Call the Midwife. The first episode will air at 8pm, followed by the second episode at 8.30pm.
The synopsis for the initial episode reads, "Period drama based on Janice Hadlow's novel, telling the story of the overlooked middle sister in Pride and Prejudice, both during the events of Jane Austen's classic novel and beyond. The Meryton assembly brings Mary's first taste of romance, but also leaves her forced to decide between trying to please her family and forging a path of her own."
The second episode hints at additional turmoil: "After disappointment at the ball, Mary sets aside hopes of finding a match and devotes herself to more serious pursuits. But Mary's resolve is tested when Mr Bennet's distant cousin, Mr Collins, visits Longbourn with a surprising proposal. Mary contemplates a decision which could save her family from ruin, but is she really willing to suppress her true feelings to secure her family's future?"
Prior to the series finale, Call the Midwife's official Instagram account posted a behind-the-scenes photograph featuring several cast members on location. Followers glimpsed the Turner family alongside Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett), beaming towards the camera.
The accompanying caption read: "Sunday's concluding episode of Series 15 has everything; smiles and sadness, humour and heartache, solemnity and celebration x."
It added: "Filming the episode was a rollercoaster of emotions for the cast - but there were moments of real joy. Is it even a Call the Midwife finale without a behind-the-scenes Turner family selfie? Mind you, we love this year's bonus photobomb from Nurse Crane!
"Whenever our team works together, there's a bit of a party atmosphere - but those flowers and the finery they're all wearing tell you that they're filming something extra special."
This prompted viewers to speculate about the finale's outcome, with numerous fans anticipating Sister Joan's demise.
