British mums are in for a treat with this year's Mother's Day offerings from UK supermarkets and big chocolate brands. Chocolate is a classic Mother's Day gift, and there is a wide range of options to choose from, depending on your mum's preferences, how much you want to spend, and how big you want to go. From delightful little treats to more luxurious and large selections, there is something for every Mother's Day gift giver this year.

We compared 25 different Mother's Day chocolates and sweet treats available to UK shoppers. From classics like Cadbury to new additions to the roster from the likes of Waitrose and M&S, there is something for every budget and flavour. I gathered Mother's Day chocolate gifts and recruited some colleagues to pick which ones they would buy for their mums, based on value for money and how appealing they looked as gifts. The results were varied, but there were certainly some stand-outs.

Cadbury

A massive chocolate bar that reads "thank you" seems like an appropriate gift for mothers who do more for us than we realise. At £5 for 360g from retailers like Tesco, it is on the pricier side, and some colleagues thought they could get better value elsewhere.

Cadbury also included a box of Roses in its Mother's Day round-up, which cost £5.50 in Sainsbury's. While they weren't chosen by any of my colleagues, Roses are a chocolate gift that stands the test of time, and it's a good one for mums who like the classics.

Tony's Chocolonely

Tony's Chocolonely has two beautiful Mother's Day bars on offer this year. Its 'Happy Mother's Day' wrapper was incredibly eye-catching, and we were immediately drawn to it as a gift for our mums.

However, when I revealed the bar cost over £7, some of my colleagues were put off. A couple of them believed they could get better value for money elsewhere. Yet customers can customise wrappers and flavours this Mother's Day via Tony's website, adding a lovely personal touch to gifting chocolate this year.

In its Mother's Day chocolate gifting range, Waitrose shared two decadent, luxurious options: Pink Champagne Truffles and Salted Caramel Truffles. The Pink Champagne ones were a particular stand-out, and the £6 price tag felt worth it.

Waitrose is known as a higher-end UK supermarket, so this price isn't all that surprising. I tasted the Salted Caramel Truffles, and I can say that £6 isn't too bad for a chocolate gift that your mother will be highly impressed by.

Three boxes of Ferrero were sent to the Daily Express office by representatives. A 24-piece box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates costs just over £10 at Tesco, and the price and value went down well with the team.

There was also a smaller 15-piece Ferrero collection set, including different flavours such as Raffaello. Priced at just over £7 in supermarkets, it could be seen as a cost-effective but delightful gift for mums this year.

There was also a box of Raffaello, which costs between £5 and £7 in British supermarkets. One colleague, with a particular love for the coconut flavour, was drawn to it instantly and believed it was worth the money if she were to gift it to her mum.

Maltesers

A classic loved by all, Maltesers are always a good option for a Mother's Day gift. We sampled the 336g box of Maltesers Truffles, which cost £7 in Asda.

As expected, they were a popular option among colleagues, and they believed it was worth the price.

Thornton's

Thornton's has become a beloved chocolate brand in the UK and is a go-to for many Mother's Day gift-givers each year. However, neither of the Thortons' boxes caught our attention.

Despite this, they offer pretty decent value for money. The Thornton's Classic Box of 23 chocolates is priced at £9.50 and is available on British high streets across the country. This one includes all the classic British flavours and has been loved by mums for generations.

There is also the Continental box, which is slightly more expensive at £11 in supermarkets. However, this one offers more diverse flavours, making it slightly more luxurious for mums this Mother's Day.

Hotel Chocolat

Hotel Chocolat is one of the more luxurious chocolate brands on the market, and people expect to pay a pretty penny for it. The box we had in front of us - the 18-piece Mother's Day Everything Chocolate Box - was a favourite among a number of my colleagues.

Even when I told them it was listed as £18 on some sites, they still thought it was worth it, based on what was inside. It is listed at £24 on Hotel Chocolat's website, but we still think it's worth it for lucky mums who deserve a bit of luxury this Sunday.

Lindt

Another luxury box comes from Lindt. We were supplied the Lindt Swiss Luxury Selection box, and we were pretty surprised by how low the price was. In Asda, it is currently reduced from £11.50 to £8.50 - a considerably low price considering the 19 assorted pralines you get inside.

It is certainly one of our top picks, but a UK supermarket actually took the top spot in our favourites.

M&S

Marks and Spencer really stepped up to the plate with its Mother's Day range. The British supermarket is proving that it can strike a balance between affordability and luxury, giving shoppers the chance to get Mother's Day gifts for their mums at pretty reasonable prices.

Everyone on the team was pretty blown away by what it had to offer. M&S has quite an array of Mother's Day gifts this year, including freeze-dried berries covered in chocolate for £5, 27g gold hearts for £1.25, All Butter Lemon Shortbread Rounds for £5, an Afternoon Tea selection including six cakes for £6, and packs of Connie the Caterpillar Mini's with Raspberry Filling for £3.75.

There is also a Raspberry and Lemon Cake for £4.25, which wowed the team even more when I revealed the price.

This Mother's Day, our recommendation is to head to M&S. The own-label Mother's Day range trumps every other supermarket, and you'll find many of the above-mentioned chocolate brands.
